Telkom reaches agreement with MTN

Johannesburg - African telecoms giant MTN announced South Africa's first uncapped mobile broadband contracts on Tuesday, following an announcement in April of uncapped one-day data bundles.

Surajh Surjoo, senior manager of consumer segment and broadband at MTN, said that the new uncapped contracts will be on a 24-month basis. Two contracts are available; MTN Uncapped Lite and Pro.

Both packages have a fair usage policy after which the connection is slowed down to 128 kilobits per second, but subscribers will not be cut off.

"It really is all you can eat," says Surjoo. "And there is no shaping on either contract, only speed throttling after the fair usage limit is reached."

Surjoo said that the Lite package has a fair usage policy of 3GB and 10GB for the Pro package.

The Lite package is billed at R749 per month and the Pro at R1999.

Surjoo said that MTN is also piloting the first UMTS 900Mhz 3G connections in SA that offers a stronger signal than conventional 3G technologies.

"We have already launched one-day uncapped broadband passes and these have been met with enthusiasm by the market. This has paved the way for the first uncapped long-term contracts in SA," said Surjoo.

He added that the contracts would be available from June 1 2010.

128kbits? in real world speed thats something like 6 kilobytes..."6 KB!!!!" at that...mm.. slow("speed" dont sound right) emails with attachments will take 20 minutes. Coz thats how slow it becomes with the one day version. The should call it the 'Daylight Robbery Package'.

Mr M Aug 11 2010 11:03
I just want them to give us even 1 3rd of the speed they (LIE0 i mean boast about. I connect all over South Africaand never ever ever ever have I hit any speed near what they boast. Even at a split second peak I have not seen anything... Also why is data soooo dwam expensive in this country. *Its like paying for Air and the amount you breathe* The catch 22 is the faster the speed the more datayou ar going to use. because you can do more. I say one monthly fee no cap no throttle what what... just pure service....

ROFLMAO May 27 2010 11:31
Ok ok wait, everyone is complaining on the pricing, yes, granted those prices are way out of control and the dumb sh*t who made them up should be publicly shot - However, why on earth would anyone pay for those ridiculous prices when the coverage is absolutely shocking, I travel all over for business and some places have hsdpa but its still dismal, then some places ( which mind you are in built up, urban areas ) can only receive gprs.. Fix your coverage BEFORE fixing prices you fugly dipsticks

Steve May 27 2010 10:28
The telecomms fatcats will one day fry in their own fat...

Peter May 22 2010 08:53
HAHAHAHHAH has anyone actually looked at what the average South African actually earns.

Peter May 22 2010 08:49
When will the powers that be understand that there are 59 million people in this country and stop catering only to that 20 percent that can afford these ridiculous prices. The reason ADSL works everywhere else and is affordable is because it is pitched at the whole population creating job opportunities and increasing levels of education.

War May 20 2010 13:49
3Gb "fair use"? They really do think we're stupid.

DISKI May 20 2010 11:31
what a dissapointment ... MTN needs to go back to their drawing boards and try again coz anybody who takes up this offer deserves the foul smell of the feast of plenty turning bad as they werent equiped properly to take part...LOL !!

Pedant May 20 2010 10:32
What's the difference between "shaped" or "capped" and, ahem, "speed throttling"?

NotGettingIt May 19 2010 18:41
Good to see South Africans can still agree on something. Maybe it's time for torches and pitchforks? Nice one, MTN. I hope you choke on all your stolen money.

Theuns May 19 2010 16:37
What a joke. Bandwidth in SA is a rip-off. I moved my website to singlehop.com in Chicago because of this. I pay $165 for a dedicated server + 10TB(1024GB) data transfer monthly. I used to host with Afrihost who charges R165 for a shared server + 3GB data transfer. You do the math. Shame on you MTN,Vodacom Telkom and the rest.

Alex Penhaligon May 19 2010 16:17
What a load of horse poo!!!!!! It's quite funny that this comes out when 4G is around the corner. Speeds will rise, prices will decrease. Surjoo, your pathetic attempt to make a quick buck out of people that do not know better will not go without notice!!! I pitty da fool!

Colin May 19 2010 15:40
Mtn owes me a refund for over billing me in arrears. Never, ever will I contract to them again!!!!

Somebody help May 19 2010 15:05
@HJ, like you said MTN are the rip-off artists of note.Come to think of it, are we paying for a botch-up of MTN paying some $700 million for fifa to broadcast their matches on cellphones and for advertising. Look their CEO, Phutuma resigned. Its not often that a CEO of a company that's doing well resigns and has no other career lined up already. And if you ask me, i dont see those adds that people can watch the WC games on their cellphones, or is it just me?

Owen May 19 2010 13:33
have had the luxury of being billed for data transfers of 43Mbps and still have an outstanding bill for R7000 for November and December 2009 as a result of MTN’s incompetence and inability to manage their data billing accounts, and that is after receiving a refund of R1500 for the errors they admitted to!!! MTN are an absolute joke!

kjac May 19 2010 13:07
Surajh Surjoo why do you continue to believe that the SA public are idiots. you're an moron

geedee May 19 2010 12:26
Thats a tad expensive. How can they expect mass uptake with those prices. Fair enough prices cant compare to US/EU/Asia because the infrastructure is just not there yet... but at some point it will have to change. In the UK for instance you can have 50Meg broadband to your house for roughly R300. For Surajh to say it's "All you can eat" is a joke, he must have a very small stomach and a very big wallet.

Deon May 19 2010 12:06
Utterly Disgusted MTN, Get with the program, I think a fair price is R399 for 3G and R699 for 10G I would sign up at those prices. You are not doing us any favours

Dave May 19 2010 11:57
Mobile broadband is not the same as fixed (ADSL). At least when you complain try to compare apples with apples.

Shameless May 19 2010 11:52
On the very same page this pathetic sotry is run from- there is an add for MWEB Uncapped 499- Ha ha ha ha ha - Deep breath - HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.

Insanely Expensive May 19 2010 11:33
Do MTN think we are all morons. This is such cr*p. What a load of drivel. I will not take MTN offerings seriously again.

Krishni May 19 2010 11:23
R749 for 3G.....what a rip-off

Viven May 19 2010 11:17
@Grant I don't, I work for Momentum totally out of the telecoms sector. However I used to work for a UK ISP years back and from experience can tell you that only when one company creates a new offering can others take cognizance and better their products and offerings to the public and create competition which is much needed for us consumers. I totally agree with all of you that this is a cr@p deal and no1 should be so silly to take it but it does leave the competition open for other companies to easily better it.

mike May 19 2010 10:53
Dingle you should be trashing MTN for this attempted rip, not promoting its virtues. Get some morality & quick.

AB Surd May 19 2010 10:46
It's all you can eat if your'e a REALLY slow eater. And like very expensive food.

Logic May 19 2010 10:27
Can News 24 please employ journalists who have the ability to critique the subject they are writing about....and stop waisting our time. Or did Mr Dingle receive a backhand from MTN to publish this article?

Grant May 19 2010 10:08
@ Vivan U must be working for mtn. That is one massive ripoff. MTN the only difference between you and a thieve is that you wont be going to jail for ripping people off.

Sam May 19 2010 10:03
3Gb then throttles down to 128kbs if you are lucky. You will most probably only see 16 to 35kbs in practice. If your 3G has ever worked at 3mbs let me know.

Anti MTN May 19 2010 09:58
The biggest bunch of crooks ive ever crossed path with in my life. Unprofesional & Incompetent is a lightly way to describe their practises. Laughing stock of the trade!!!!!!!!

jualette May 19 2010 09:47
Once again MTN disappoints the general public. As a "contracted" MTN client with the lack of service and now with this pointless offer. Do they not know what their competitors are doing? Go and do your homework and do not view all of your client base as the average third world market. Shame on you MTN.

gigabyte May 19 2010 09:44
Thiefs are everywhere. They always try and take peoples hard earned money. 2k for 10gb is madness even if its mobile.how much can one download if youre always mobile. 128kps....that is just not ayoba at all.go play somewhere else

thembisa May 19 2010 09:43
Too expensive and Grant, I agree with you MTN is definitely from the devil. Worse service provider in the whole of south africa or africa!!!

Arshad Dossa May 19 2010 09:35
2GB only and then throttled down to 128Kbs. That doesnt sound like uncapped to me!?!

Jock May 19 2010 09:32
I would not take up this offering if it were FREE!! MTN's terrible after sales service has put me off them for life. I wont recommend them to anyone. You guys suck at being AYOBA!!

Jean May 19 2010 09:30
Welcome to SA - Where everything is 3rd World but we charge more than the 1st World and then we still drop the service levels even further after we have your money. Leka leka Local

What???? May 19 2010 09:30
What a joke. No one is excited by being ripped off again as usual. At that price it should be uncapped, unshapped, not throttled. Do all the telecoms companies in SA live under a rock? I can confirm that we (customers) don't and know what the world is paying for data. How can you charge the earth for something that isn't worth anything?

Santosh May 19 2010 09:27
Another rip off. All these comms guys have ever done is rip us off. Nothing changes.

Viven May 19 2010 09:20
Hi all, yes I have to agree that the price is still way too high. However you all must realise that this is just a stepping stone for other wireless providers to now also offer an uncapped service with possibly a better throttle of 384Kbps at more reasonable prices. Please look at the positives here, no one is forcing any of us to take a 24month MTN contract it is just what they are now offering. c'mon bright side guys ;)

Duncan May 19 2010 09:11
Wow! The deceit continues!!! There is absolutely NOTHING reasonable about this. These fat cat cell phone giants have lost lots of business to land line ADSL & trying to get market share back. Boycott is the word that comes to mind.

Veebad May 19 2010 08:49
This is a comlete ripp-off a 3GB fair use cap can be reached in one day. I have a uncapped package with afrihost for under R200, there fair use policy is 20GB before some ports are throttled and 40GB before you are shaped to 256KB/s MTN are ripping the ring out of it

Kurt May 19 2010 08:49
My Vodacom 3G now R549 pm for an effective 2.5Gb... Do the sums. Uncapped? Joke.

HJ May 19 2010 08:47
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE RIP_OFF ARTISTS!!!!! MTN overbilled me to the tune of R10000 in 6 months on my data account and in 6 months of calling, mailing and even Hellopeter.com they never even acknowledged my complaints. Do NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE THIEVES!

peter May 19 2010 08:46
The great SA rip off continues. MTN and the rest are colluding and should be investigated. Telkom too should shoulder the blame as they control the traffic in and out of SA. What happened to Seacom with their cable? Did they also get sucked into the monthly meeting at a local restaurant to fix prices??? This is one area in serious need of competition board investigation.

An0n May 19 2010 08:46
This is just a joke. Uncapped.. what ever. The sad thing is that most of the public will gobble up those lies like sweet cake. Has anyone ever tried to even brows with a 128kbps line. Most sited today demand higher bandwidth. Really guys. get a grip. say U use your cap in 2 days ( totally doable with youtube HD and live video streaming) that leaves an average of 28 days at 128kbps. so the uncapped line is capped at 48Gb. that is if you use it for 24 hours a DAY.

An0n May 19 2010 08:46

fair usage policy people. they slow down the connection after 3g and 10g respectively, but the amount of bandwidth you consume is unlimited. however, i still dont know if i can trust mtn..

Tim May 19 2010 08:45
April fool joke? at those prices you will be ripped a new ring!!

An0n May 19 2010 08:45

Unbelievable! May 19 2010 08:45
OK, it's official: the SA consumer is the laughing stock of the cellular service providers. An fair-usage, 'uncapped' 10Gb at exactly the same price as other 10Gb packages - and that's supposed to be new and exciting, revolutionary even? I mean, shows you exactly how much they think of the consumers: not only can they take us for a ride, they think we're stupid too!

Krums May 19 2010 08:44
Wat se jy!!! R1999 for 10GB??? R749 for 3GB??? My excitement over the headlines dissipated into dispair as I read the article. Mr Surjoo, are you sure you didn't slap on one to many 9's at the end of the prices???

Foster May 19 2010 08:44
Thats too expensive!

thethinkingman May 19 2010 08:43
This volume based nonsense has to stop. We should pay for a connection ( pipeline size ) only and that's that. Throttling after a volume is hit is deceitful and wrong. As for the charges . . give me a break. I pay R2000 a month for unlimited volume for a satellite feed because there is no broadband where I am. In the UK it would cost 20 quid. TELCOM is a fascist monopoly and thats why MTN gets away with it's nonsense because everything goes through TELCOM ultimately.

Haha May 19 2010 08:42
Uncapped? Most of the time you will only get 128 kilobits, if you are lucky. The capacity does not exist to give real uncapped speeds. And it is too expensive, fullstop.

Thembisa @ Grant May 19 2010 08:41
"MTN is from the devil". I have always said that and I am so glad that someone else shares the same sentiments. I hate MTN. This great deal that Surjoo is on about is a joke. It's too expensive!!! I think we should just all stop using MTN . Can't wait for my contract to expire. Their service and billing system is pathetic and ......*angry face*

Clive Varejes May 19 2010 08:36
At least we know one thing, MTN definitely has the philosophy of 'Bullsh.. baffles brains' R1999.00 for 10 Gb....!!!! Well at least its better than R3900.00 for 1.5 Gb Well I am sure there are a lot of brainless people out there who will be caught,... again

Stephan May 19 2010 08:36
hier is die opsie vir jou vir internet.

Nar May 19 2010 08:34
They must be joking ? It is uncapped but we will throttle you if you hit your CAP ? And you can do so much with 128 Kbps...

Mweb May 19 2010 08:31
Rip-off. Still doesnt beat Mweb's uncapped for R219.

UrBaN May 19 2010 08:31
What a joke!! What a ripoff - R1999???? This is NOT true uncapped - fair use my @ss! Fair use would be 100GB per month not a lame 10GB. Just like their 1 day "unlimited" use offering this too is a load of cr@p.

vxv May 19 2010 08:30
This is a joke - MTN - you market to the poor class community - you dont have what it takes to offer broadband services - your prices are, how can I put this nicely - SUCKS!! Keep your broadband thank you very much

Fred May 19 2010 08:29
I think we should throttle some MTN executives . 128Kbps is a joke.

Hennie May 19 2010 08:25
At these prices they are not really "pioneering" anything.

ex-MTN fan May 19 2010 08:23
MTN is only announcing this cause they're about to be upstaged by Cell C with their 4G infrastructure. The deal sucks and you'd be better off waiting to see what Cell C is going to come up with, the speed will probably be 10 times better than MTN!.

VXV May 19 2010 08:21
PFFFFT - MTN cannot even offer proper mobile services- I cannot imagine paying them R2k for 10GIG - that is overpriced anyway. Anyone going for this is stupid

CTheB May 19 2010 08:21
Straight from the Apple school of marketing except that instead of pretending they're offering something new and revolutionary, they're pretending they're offering something reasonable at a reasonable price.

Peter56 May 19 2010 08:20
This is NOT UNCAPPED MTN !!! - you still have caps - 3GB and 10GB and calling it fair usage is simply changing the subject.

Dave May 19 2010 08:20
Throttled to 128kbits after 10gb. This product won't sell. I'll stick to my 500mb mobile top ups and let my 4mb uncapped at home do the heavy lifting. All in that's R1,189. At 200gb-300gb a month this MTN product won't fly for users like me. Sorry MTN, try again.

Thabs May 19 2010 08:20
i actually knew not to get excited before reading this and boy was i not dissapointed! these people are really dragging their feet when it comes to giving consumers real deals. i will not be paying this and mtn should be a bit embarrassed actually...

Leon May 19 2010 08:18
Even Sudan have better rates and services, South Africa must get with the program.

Daniel May 19 2010 08:18
What a joke, so its uncapped mobile ISDN. "Broadband" speeds in this country are already a joke, now they are pusing 3G at 128k, please. Put a realistic package on the table or none at all, this is just embarrasing for MTN

Ripoff May 19 2010 08:15
What a huge ripoff! One can only laugh..

Dreyer Smit May 19 2010 08:14
I was excited when I read the email...Maybe Vodacom will come up with something better. Well they are better, R549 for 3.5Gb Data at HSDPA speeds...I'll opt for that and add more bundles as I go. MTN you suck.

Hug May 19 2010 08:11
I just came back from the UK last year. I used to leave my internet on 24/7. I could download as much as as i want. Look at youtube as much and as lond as i want. Guess how much i paid. FREEEEEE DUDE WITH MY SKY PACKAGE of 36 pounds. why are we continuously being ripped off.

Coenstant May 19 2010 08:09
In Namibia we get 5Gb per month for R400-00, and it doubles up for two months if you don't use all of it.

Scuba May 19 2010 08:04
Did Surajh Surjoo have a ski mask on and a gun when he had the interview. Thats daylight robbery!

aj May 19 2010 08:03
At least if you take this you wont get R10000.00 bills to dispute. MTN billing and customer service are a joke.

Darrell Lush May 19 2010 07:59
Gee, you pay that much and then your connection get throttled, why, it doesn't make sense.

Belinda May 19 2010 07:59
I have had the most nightmarish experience with my 3G from MTN, the extort you for out of bundle usage, then when you buy extra megs they charge for the contract + extra GB + out of the original bundle usage. STEALING all the way to the bank. MTN is the worst SP I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with, they never answere their phones, they steal from you and they treat you like a dog. I do not even know the wods to say how much I dislike them. MOBILE TERRORIST NETWORK is more what they should be called.

Father Glen May 19 2010 07:58
It's ludicrously expensive. There are infinitely better deals available in South Africa. Anyone who pays MTN's prices deserves to be taken for a ride.

pearl May 19 2010 07:57
Rip off

Al May 19 2010 07:56
MTN are a bunch of thieves. Stay away. I have CREDIT in my account that I can't get back: MY money which they "gave me back" after they overcharged. I WANT IT IN MY ACCOUNT WHERE IT CAME FROM IN THE FIRST PLACE YOU THUGS.

Uncapped May 19 2010 07:48
So what is a 10GB uncapped line???? Oh yes capped at 10GB. How to lie through there teeth and make it sound good.

steve May 19 2010 07:44
hahahahahaha, *BREATHE* MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, typical SA rip off. "It really is all you can eat" *BREATHE* MWUAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA pathetic.

Somebody help May 19 2010 07:42
can somebody out tere tell me where do i go with this MTN. From the fracas of last year where i was billed 6700% more on data usage which I didn't know about. i paid the huge R10000 as compared to my normal R148-R200 that I was paying all along. I have since decided to use the internet on frugal basis, basically browsing the newspapers and online sport magazines (local), in fact for the past three months I haven't been using internet and as a result had data accumulated, but come this month end, I have been billed twice the monthly amount I normally pay. I have complained to them many times, I have contacetd ask petr.com, i have phoned, I mean everything I needed to do. It appears to me with MTN, evenif I try to limit my usage or non-usage acrtually, they will make me pay whether i like it or not. The crunch of the problem is, this is a new contract less than 6 months old and another 19 months still to go on it. Cancelling it and paying penalties to them will be to their pride and joy for getting money on a platter that they didn't supply any services for. Just who can I take this complaint to???

Michael May 19 2010 07:42
@Lydon - "throttling some customers down to 128Kbps from 21+Mbps" - Who the hell gets 21Mbps 3G? The highest 3G is 14.4, but I agree with you it should be throttled to at least 384kbps, if not higher. It's a ripoff in "bargain" clothing. And some people will have more money than brains and buy in.

eugene May 19 2010 07:40
This is stealing, only companies can pay this type of money and will lead to more retrenchments. people are addicted to the hi tech and must haves! what happens when the contract is not paid? the average salary is +- R5000.00 permonth RSA, its like the world cup song, DOWN DOWN.

ken May 19 2010 07:35
Does Simon Dingle have shares in MTN? His article should have been titled "MTN pioneers uncapped RIP OFF!".

MTN-ohno May 19 2010 07:31
"And there is no shaping on either contract, only speed throttling after the fair usage limit is reached." - speed throttling is shaping stupid mtn. This whole deal is a joke. If you get 21Mbps speed and that a very big if, you will be throttled within the first 10 minutes of the month and the rest of the time you will be killed with speeds that belongs in the previous millennium. These should not even be a word like Uncapped. Only in South Africa are we ripped off to believe that there is a capping on the internet. We are made to believe this by greedy companies like MTN.

Grant May 19 2010 07:30
crap offering

Warren May 19 2010 07:30
All together know PA-THE-TIC !!!!!!! What a joke !!

Carl Muller May 19 2010 07:25
Good old Telkom. I have 6 Gig with Telkom and use it up every month. With a 1000 calls a month I pay just over R800. MTN, you sucks.

Notbee May 19 2010 07:22
Daylight robbery. Why do they even bother advertising this. Shameless thieves.

What? May 19 2010 07:20
MTN can't be serious.... SA pioneered web technology in Africa, and the rest looked to us for benchmarks. What happened? we sat back and forgot that thechnology evolves. Now we are struggling to play catch-up with most of Africa. The so called 'poor nations' are now miles ahead in broadband technology and pricing. Come on MTN go back to the drawing board!

Simon May 19 2010 07:18
As I understand it, one is not even allowed to call a product "broadband" if it runs at anything less than 384kbps, as telkom discovered when they were selling their 192k lines as just that. MTN, you are still ripping the ring. Stop taking people for a ride and create some realistic packages.

Vincent May 19 2010 07:17
I run a website design and website hosting firm. I host websites on my servers. Imagine if I took one of those rubbish contracts and my clients had to have there websites cripped at that speed (128kb) due to my hosting it on my server. I think I would have lost most of my clients.

Allan May 19 2010 07:06
This is just ridiculous. When are we gonna get a decent connection speed at a decent price? My friends overseas laugh at us with the pathetic 'service' we get. Come on MTN, get real and give your customers something we can actually afford - or are you only concerned about the shareholders...

At those prices Surjoo must be kidding. That is not uncapped it is a total rip-off, and coupled with MTN's complete lack of service, and the MTN stores take it or don't waste my time attitude, I can only see suckers going for it. Overseas I pay about 1/10th of that for true uncapped, complete with rapid and smiling service.

Yet another RIP OFF

Niel May 19 2010 06:43
They are ripping you off guys! I pay $ 79 (around R400) for 50 GB Lightspeed uncapped in New Zealand (and our Telecom XT is even worse than MTN!). This relates to around R 80 for 10 GB? WTF!

D May 19 2010 06:40
Absolutely pathetic!!! no words can describe the poor culture of the mobile networks in this country. I have recently cancelled both my mobile data contracts and much rather use telkom. cheaper and not weather dependant.

Eyes Only May 19 2010 06:39
I think they miss the whole concept of uncapped.... "only speed throttling after the fair usage limit is reached." Which means you connected at 128kbs which is a slow connection already and after you have used an x amount not stated the speed reduces... Be carefull what you getting yourself into.... As far as I know Virgin Mobile has the cheapest internet rates but lack connection speed a bit...

gasguy May 19 2010 06:27
People can get uncapped for far less than this why would they spend R2k a month for it? What an advertising gimmick, but someone will fall for it

George May 19 2010 06:17
How can it be uncapped if it is limited to 3 and 10 Gb? Ha ha internet is a joke in SA and SA will never reach its full potential till we have real uncapped internet. The rest of the world is lightyears ahead of us because they have decent uncapped internet. Where I live in Korea priority is given to the internet and we use it extensively in the classroom and in preparation for our lesson. If we had the capped system here education, never mind business, would not survive. Get real SA and enter the 21st century. Capped internet is oh so last century.

WTF May 19 2010 06:14
We have the minister of Communication saying that everybody will have access to the internet by 2025 yet we are made to pay R2000 to have uncapped internet on MTN. The internet is a powerful learning toll yet we one of the lowest penetration rates in the world coupled by ridicolous high prices. The government,as with other important issues, has once again let this country down. The internet must be fostered and developed so everyone in this country gets it at minimal cost.

Richard May 19 2010 06:14
No wonder people can't afford to pay their bills. These prices are absolutely absurd. I have a 1MB broadband line here in Dubai and it is uncapped. It definitely does not get slowed down due to the fair use policy and I only pay R400pm. Come on guys stop ripping off the public and give them what is right. Do the maths, lower rates means more subscribers which equals more revenue.

evilredzombie May 19 2010 06:13
rip off MTN ! Maybe if it dropped to say 384Kbps... But realy ! 128Kbps what are we in 1998 again?

Tom May 19 2010 06:08
R749 with fair usage of 3G,come on. You can get uncapped ADSL for R200 with a fair usage probably at 100GB.

Gazza May 19 2010 05:45
Nice. So if they're charging people R15,000 a month on a R700 contract, this should be interesting ... I see a couple of people getting R150,000 bills in the coming months ...

Riaan May 19 2010 05:05
I like the way they (MTN and fixed line ISPs) sell their products as UNCAPPED, but then start throttlening you after you've downloaded xGB, becuase you are now abusing, or reached your 'fair usage' cap. Then they must not sell it as Uncapped, but xGB premium with throttling after your xGB cap has been reached. Just my 2 cents

Stuffed May 19 2010 04:16
Might be as much as I could eat but more than I could afford. Also, am I being daft, but does UNcapped not mean no limit? Surely MTN realise that people using the internet actually does have more than one braincell. Anyone that falls for this trick actually diserves to be ripped off.

Stuffed May 19 2010 04:06
It might be all I could eat, but way more than I can afford. Mweb offers uncapped @ R299 + line rental and NO cut off.

ted May 19 2010 03:26
Given MTN's recent billing issues, even if I was tempted by this offer, I wouldn't go near it.

LaughitOff May 19 2010 01:38
Hahaaa for that price - Sure Vodacom has more sense. Mtn just never gets it perfect - they always get it almost perfect then vodacom comes and get it perfect.

Joe May 19 2010 01:35
Wow, africa IS far behind the developed world!

Mr PublicAction May 19 2010 00:49
MTN should be audited not only for their rediculas premium rip-off packages but also for the amount of crack they all smoke during their selfish brainstorm sessions. I cannot wait till my 3G contract runs out. These new uncapped packages arent there for the customer at all. MTN's track record present and past proves that Joe Bloggs the inocent public victim is the one that falls short all the way. Disgusting mentality from this monopoly player. Just stop governing your clients and make things affordable so that when the sh$%t hits the fan you dont look like complete crooks.

JP May 19 2010 00:03
If they throttle you after 3 and 10 gigs respectively, it's not exactly an uncapped service is it? Carte Blanche Consumer needs to investigate this nonsense of calling services "uncapped" when they're not really, given that you can't really use the internet at 128kbps...

John May 18 2010 23:58
This is actually quite a joke. It would seem, that once again, in the true nature of South African business, the wool is being pulled over the eyes of the general public. Let's look at the term "Uncapped". Before the new Seacom cable was being laid to rest on the bottom of the Indian Ocean, ISP's used to use a term called "Capped", which meant, quite literally, exactly what you thought it meant - once you used up a specific amount of allocated data, you were cut off from the internet, or capped. So naturally you'd think that the antonym for capped would be uncapped, and that if capped means you have a fixed number of data units, uncapped would obviously mean an unlimited or infinite number of units, thereby allowing you to download as much data as you want. Yes? Well, sort of... There's a little thing that ISP's like to call a "fair usage policy" - which basically says, "you can use as much data as you like, excepting that if you use more than a stipulated amount, we'll cap you or throttle your download speed to something so ridiculous it will give you time to do things like clean the kitchen and take the garbage out while you wait...". In fact, I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't some kind of legal ramification here. If I swore to give you "uncapped" access to my 1976 Fender, based on the fact that I used to only provide you with "capped" (and used to call it that too) access, you'd take that to be unlimited access right? So would any sane person. Now I don't mind too much if the ISP's want to throttle you if you're trying to download the whole of youtube in one day. What I would like, is for them to call a spade a spade and not use the term "uncapped" if, after a certain "cap" they throttle your speed to an unusable one, thereby practically having the effect of a hard cap. But sadly, "ThrottleCapped" doesn't sell quite so easily as "Uncapped", which of course means they don't actually have to get competative and offer a truly "uncapped", zero throttle service. But hey, I'll just say what 90% of South Africans would say, "Don't be so negative. At least it's a start!"...

kuda May 18 2010 23:02
That's a bit expensive though

LJ May 18 2010 23:01
R1999 per month for 10GIG? Is Suraj Surjoo su-moking his su-ocks???

William May 18 2010 22:42
Compared to Europe and the States, it is still a huge ripoff.

Simon Boshoff May 18 2010 22:35
pathetic! so 1998

rob May 18 2010 22:19
This is still way to expensive for a small business.I am seriously considering telkom and sell my MTN 3G modem.I use up 2Gigs every five weeks and have two sim cards to switch in between because of the expire date.A fairly priced 3Gigs data bundle would be some thing to look at.

User May 18 2010 22:18
IT COSTS HOW MUCH????

jameel May 18 2010 22:18
"It really is all you can eat," ...Surjoo dont make me laugh. Are you for real? R1999 for 10GB per month. I pay R150 for uncapped here in the UK. Its pathetic and businesses like yours should be ashamed for robbing the public. SHAME ON YOU!!!!

ByteMyAss May 18 2010 21:43
LOL...gota love marketing. With those prices you pay for every single bit you download. Uncapped yeah right...

Grant Abbott May 18 2010 21:42
Awesome. Now they have another avenue to exploit, rip off and disappoint customers. Trust me, MTN is from the devil and anyone who thinks R2000 for 10Gb is a good deal has a whole lot to learn!!

Lydon May 18 2010 21:38
Those prices are a joke. They could at the very least throttle the speed to the entry-level broadband speed of 384Kbps. How they can justify throttling some customers down to 128Kbps from 21+Mbps is beyond me.
