Johannesburg - The National Union of Mineworkers
(NUM) said on Thursday that wage negotiations with construction mining
company Murray and Roberts Cementation (MUR) had officially collapsed with
the issuing of a certificate of non-resolution to the dispute by the CCMA
last night.
The NUM said it demanded a minimum entry salary of R3 500 per month
and a 13% wage increment whilst Murray and Roberts offered a 9.5% increase
on wages.
As a result, the union said 7 000 workers would down tools on Monday to
press the employer for better wages.
"The strike will affect all companies where Murray and Roberts is
involved in construction such as Gold Fields' South Deep, Aquarius Platinum,
Impala and others. The industrial action is scheduled to begin on Monday
morning," the NUM said.
"We cannot accept these meagre wages. If Murray and Roberts refuses to
come to the party, we will come to the party through mass action," said
Zwelitsha Tantsi, the NUM 's chief negotiator at Murray and Roberts.
