Johannesburg - The National Union of Mineworkers (Num) has declared a wage dispute with construction firm Murray & Roberts (M&R), less than two weeks after employers in the sector concluded a pay deal with unions.
According to M&R spokesperson Eduard Jardim, the latest dispute relates to the group's mining projects.
"The new wage negotiation is about workers we have specifically in the mining industry, in our cementation business," said Jardim.
Num is demanding a 15% wage hike for these workers, while M&R is offering 9%.
The union is also demanding an entry level wage of R5 000 for category B workers.
"We are serious about reaching an agreement, but there's a huge gap between category A (earning R9 500) and B (earning R2 500) workers," Num said.
It plans to meet the company again on August 7 to try to resolve the matter.
About 90% of Murray & Roberts' mining work is in the platinum sector, and its biggest client is Aquarius Platinum, Jardim said.
