Moral hazard, financial weapons of mass destruction, a huge mess - these were the words used by a founder member to sum up the collapse of the Pinnacle Point Group.
Johannesburg - Heavyweight construction group Murray & Roberts has laid off 3 900 of its cement business workers on Thursday, after they participated in an unprotected strike.
The workers - contracted to two of Aquarius Platinum's mines - decided on an illegal strike after they were displeased with successful wage negotiations between unions and the construction firm.
"An agreement of a 10.2% increase had been reached for the first year, and for the second year an increase of above the inflation rate was agreed on.
"But the workers didn't like what the unions had agreed upon, so they decided to go on their own strike," Murray & Roberts spokesperson Ed Jardim told Fin24.com at a presentation on Thursday.
On Thursday afternoon Aquarius Platinum confirmed the development in an announcement, saying full operations at its Kroondal and Marikana mines will resume again on Monday August 31. Unnamed sources told Fin24.com the illegal strike had affected 75% of platinum production at the mines.
"We will ramp up [production] over a period of up to two weeks, while further employees are engaged and deployed to these operations," the company said.
Aquarius said it anticipates a production loss of about 15 000 ounces of platinum group metals.
"The company regrets this outcome, but acknowledges that the process has been conducted in accordance with the Labour Relations Act."
