Durban - Most of the victims of a bogus Liberty Life broker had been refunded, the insurance company said on Monday.
The rest would be paid out shortly, said company spokesperson Mandy Denton.
Durban police are investigating 12 cases of fraud, linked to Liberty Life, committed between December and February.
Victims had met brokers claiming to be from Liberty Life in only two of the cases, but no contracts were signed or personal details given out.
The victims charge that Liberty Life withdrew portions of their
salaries from their bank accounts to cover premiums they did not owe.
The deductions totalled R10 000 and were made over several months, the police's Captain Thembeka Luthuli said earlier.
Liberty Life has branches countrywide and specialises in life
insurance, disability cover, medical cover, corporate insurance,
savings and investment.
Police suspect the fraudsters somehow got hold of their victims'
salary slips.
Luthuli said arrests were imminent.
Last week, Denton said five independent brokers had been found to have used personal client information to submit unauthorised policy applications.
She said the company had sent a forensic investigator to
KwaZulu-Natal to help with the police investigation.
