Dixon assumed his responsibilities as executive director designate on October 1.
Dixon's appointment follows the retirement at the end of 2003 of Richard Wilkinson, who has led the institute for the past decade.
The statement said that Dixon brings both board experience and an understanding of institutes and associations to the IoD.
During a 29-year career with Coopers & Lybrand (PricewaterhouseCoopers), he became regional chairperson KwaZulu-Natal and a member of the national executive and governing board.
Boards on which Dixon has held directorships include Guardian National Insurance Company before its merger with Santam. More recently he was the group financial director of Alacrity Financial Services Limited.
He has been a council member of the Natal Society of Chartered Accountants, and is a past chairperson of the CA(SA) Medical Aid Fund.
Between 1987 and 1999 he was on the council and an executive committee member of the Natal Rugby Union and still has strong ties with rugby.
