Harare - Automotive specialist retailer, Tiger Wheel and Tyre is strengthening its presence in Zimbabwe, with the opening of a new store in the capital, Harare.
Auto-industry players in Zimbabwe say the sector is growing, propelled by the mass importation of pre-owned vehicles from Japan, the United Kingdom and other countries.
Despite battling severe investment and cash shortages, the government has also been importing new vehicles for ministers and heads of departments and parastatals from South Africa and from other dealerships.
“Tiger Wheel & Tyre's has announced the opening of an additional store in Eastlea, near the central business district in Harare after successful entry into the Zimbabwean market in November last year,” the SA retail company said on Thursday.
The new store will be under the supervision of store manager Christopher Jairos. The newly opened outlet also incorporates fitment and alignment bays.
Auto companies have sought to capitalise on this, with another SA company, Midas Group, having a 49% interest in Transerve – a high riding automotive spare parts company with branches through-out the country.
Diversified conglomerate, Innscor Africa Innscor acquired an effective 26.01% shareholding in Transerve in July last year while the other shareholder in the auto-spares company is in the business in July 2015.
Transerve has now been incorporated into the soon to be separately listed Axia Holdings, which houses Innscor Africa’s other speciality retail and distribution businesses.
There is growing demand for diagnosis services, spare parts and other services in the industry. But it has its own challenges but it is doing well given the high imports of vehicles,” said Tapiwa Chininga, an auto industry executive in Harare.
Zimbabwe has dealerships for most vehicle brands such as General Motors, Mercedes Benz, Nissan and Toyota among others although other players say new vehicle sales have been slower. The Willowvale Mazda assembles vehicles under the Mazda brand.
