Johannesburg - Volkswagen SA (VWSA) announced on Monday that
its first-quarter sales figures surged nearly 46% to 24 861 in 2011 from 17 007
in 2010.
The German-owned vehicle manufacturer said the Volkswagen
brand notched up 17 961 sales during the first quarter of 2011, an increase of
31% over the corresponding period's 13 701 units last year.
Over the period under review, the Audi brand increased 82%
to 4 722 from 2 592
The commercial vehicles brand enjoyed the most significant
growth - 205% - in the period from January to April, having sold 714 units last
year compared with 2 178 this year.
In a statement, Volkswagen Group, the parent group, reported
a rise in global vehicle deliveries for the first four months of this year.
Europe's largest automaker delivered 2.66 million units
between January and April - an increase of 13.9% on last year's figure of 2.34
million over the corresponding period.
This outperformed the world market, which averaged a 7.7%
increase.
The company also reported a rise for the month of April,
when 690 900 vehicles were sold - up by 14.5% (2010: 603 500).
