Johannesburg - Petrochemicals company Sasol said on Wednesday it will explore for hydrocarbons in the Durban and Zululand basins off the Indian Ocean coast.
The company said the exploration permit was granted by the Petroleum Agency of South Africa for an initial period of three years.
"This is Sasol's first operated exploration right licence in South Africa for at least a decade," Ebbie Haan, managing director at Sasol Petroleum International, said in a statement.
The company said the Durban and Zululand basins were of interest because they "sit at the southern end of the Mozambique channel", where discoveries have been made.
