Sasol, GE unveil joint water technology plant

Johannesburg - Petrochemicals giant Sasol and US diversified industrials firm General Electric (GE) on Wednesday unveiled a new water technology plant that will clean water and supply biogas as a byproduct for power generation.

Known as Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor Technology (AnMBR), the new technology will be developed at Sasol’s research and development campus at Sasol One Site in Sasolburg in the Free State province.

“This particular development maximises the efficiencies of our GTL plant design and operations,” said Ernst Obersholster, executive for Sasol Group's international energy division.

The two companies said the effort aims to limit the negative impact South Africa’s water scarcity could have on the country’s economy in the future.

Tim Schweikert, the CEO of GE South Africa, said there would be dire economic implications if the crisis of water is not solved timeously in South Africa and other parts of the world where Sasol has operations.

“This partnership demonstrates what the private sector can achieve by working together for the benefit of growing the economy and making the economy competitive,” Schweikert said at a press conference in Sasolburg.

Thulani Dlamini, the executive manager at Sasol Technology, said it is important that major investments are made in technology to reduce the negative impact lack of water could have on economies in the future.

Henri Loubser, the MD of Sasol New Energy, told the media that except for Nigeria and the US, all of the 38 countries where Sasol has operations worldwide have the problem of lack of water.

AnMBR involves anaerobic micro-organisms that are able to live in an environment devoid of oxygen such as sediment layers on floors of lakes, dams and the ocean.

Sasol currently uses aerobic microbes to treat GTL and CTL effluents. The new AnMBR is one of the many solutions that can be developed in the petrochemical and refining environment to the benefit of all other industries.
