Cape Town - SABMiller [JSE:SAB] on Wednesday announced the appointment of Jan du Plessis as a new independent non-executive director, who will also take over the reigns from John Manser as chair in July next year when he retires.
This will allow for an appropriate period of familiarisation and handover, and facilitate orderly succession planning, the company said in a statement on SENS.
Sixty-year-old Du Plessis, who is a qualified chartered accountant with degrees in commerce and law from the University of Stellenbosch, has been chair of Rio Tinto and Rio Tinto Limited since 2009.
The worlds second-largest brewer will appoint Du Plessis as chairperson, in succession to Manser, at the conclusion of the annual general meeting in July 2015.
Manser said he is delighted that Du Plessis will join the board.
"He has not only an excellent record as a chairperson of major international groups with developing markets footprints, but also a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of international consumer businesses," he said.
Du Plessis said he is very excited about his appointment at SABMiller: "I have tremendous admiration for the way in which SABMiller has transformed itself over the last decade into one of the world's leading brewers.
"With a life-time of experience in the world of international consumer brands, joining the board of SABMiller is simply one of the most natural decisions I could ever hope to make," he said.
Before being appointed as chairperson of SABMiller, Du Plessis will step down as chairperson of Marks and Spencer.
