Johannesburg - A spokesperson for the Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) says it has called an urgent meeting after hearing that SABMiller is considering cutting 1 400 jobs.
The spokesperson said rumours were that the cuts would occur at its Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI) soft-drinks bottling unit.
Fawu said it wanted to have talks with ABI, one of the biggest bottlers and distributors of Coca Cola brands in the southern hemisphere.
SABMiller's South African spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
ABI, which accounts for about 60% of Coca Cola sales in South Africa, employs about 3 600 people.
