Johannesburg - The managing director of Pikitup, Zami Nkosi, has resigned with immediate effect, the City of Johannesburg said on Saturday.
"A successor for Mr Nkosi will be announced by the end of next week after the sitting of the mayoral committee," spokesperson Gabu Tugwana said.
Refuse workers at the waste management agency went on strike on Thursday, demanding among other things, that an internal investigation be commissioned into allegations of corruption and irregular tenders.
They also wanted Nkosi to be suspended pending the investigation.
The city was confident that services would resume soon.
"Contingency plans are also underway to ease the pressure on uncollected garbage," he said.
In the meantime, residents with means of transport were asked to hand their refuse to the following Pikitup depots; Goudkoppies in Devland, Marie Louise in Roodepoort, Robinson Deep in Turffontein and Ennerdale.
Residents could also deposit their waste at 42 garden sites located around the city.
Strike negotiations between Samwu and City of Johannesburg are set to continue on Monday, the union said on Sunday.
Samwu is prepared to suspend its planned strike if we have a clear resolution from the City of Joburg on our two outstanding demands, spokesperson Tahir Sema.
This was after talks deadlocked on Saturday when Samwu felt the city was not negotiating "in good faith", Sema said.
Samwu is demanding an investigation into corruption and nepotism, which it claims have led to wage disparities.
The union is also calling for "a commitment on paper" that contract workers be permanently employed.
Sema said refuse workers were prepared to strike indefinitely should their key concerns not be met.
