Num: Pay workers more with Eskom profit

Johannesburg - The profit made by power utility Eskom should go towards better wages for its workers, the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) said on Thursday.

"The Num appeals to the power parastatal to accede to the demands made by its workforce now that the company has declared huge amounts of money," Num spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Eskom declared net profit of R12.8bn in the six months to the end of September.

Eskom grew revenue by R63.9bn, mainly driven by the 25.8% tariff increase which was granted by the National Energy Regulator of SA and came into effect from April.

Seshoka said the Num was involved in a bitter wage battle with Eskom.

This had been taken to arbitration and would continue at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration from December 2 to December 8.

The Num would hold an Eskom national shopsteward council in Johannesburg on Friday to consider, among other matters, the impact of the utility's interim results.

It said Eskom had unilaterally implemented a 7% increase, backdated from July, to take effect in September.

The Num wanted a 13% hike.
