Cape Town - Nissan South Africa said it was voluntarily
recalling approximately 500 of its Qashqai crossover vehicles due to a
defective steering wheel.
The recall came after a steering wheel came off in the hands
of a Finnish customer.
BDLive reported that the problem was related to a defective
batch of steering wheels.
A Nissan spokesperson in the UK said the steering wheel got
detached as the driver was parking his vehicle at a low speed.
He was reportedly driving a new Qashqai+2 that only has
500km on the clock.
The spokesperson said the company did not know which
vehicles had the defective steering wheels and was recalling 51 000 Qashqais
globally as a precaution.
Nissan SA said the recall only affected about 500 cars locally and the company would be in touch with customers who were directly affected.
