Johannesburg - BP Southern Africa CEO Gerard Derbesy has been elected chairperson of the SA Petroleum Industry Association (Sapia), BPSA said on Tuesday.
"The chairperson is appointed annually on a rotational basis among Sapia member companies and this year the responsibility rests with BPSA," it said in a statement.
Derbesy's appointment is effective from January 2012.
He will take over from PetroSA chairperson Dr Benny Mokaba.
Derbesy has a wealth of refining and marketing experience in the oil industry, said Sapia executive director Avhapfani Tshifularo.
This he gained from over 15 years in a variety of roles in continental Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States, with responsibility for areas including refining, commercial optimisation, supply and marketing.
Derbesy said he intends strengthening the relationship between Sapia and the government.
"This remains a key objective, given the strategic nature of the petroleum industry and its significance to the South African economy," he said.
Sapia represents the interests of the South African petroleum industry.
