Medupi boasts incident-free record

Johannesburg - There have been more than 4.5 million incident-free man-hours at Eskom's Medupi power station construction site, the company said on Thursday.

The 4 636 440 of man-hours without a 'lost-time' injury was a significant milestone, Eskom said in a statement.

"In this time, the site avoided any injuries resulting in productive time lost or restricted physical activity for employees," it said.

Medupi is one of eight industrial projects underway in Limpopo, with two more planned in the next two years.

The multi-million rand development includes the rehabilitation of the rail route north west of Polokwane to carry coal to Medupi.

"This accomplishment follows intensive efforts at the site to remedy the problem of frequent injuries impacting not only workers but also the progress of the project," Eskom said.

It said the project was labour intensive, with more cement poured at Medupi than at "all the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer stadiums combined".

"Achieving over 4.5 million injury-free man-hours would not have been possible without the commitment of all 18 000 workers to a safe and productive work environment," said the project's general manager Roman Crookes.
