Hawks, Interpol have eye on PetroSA

Johannesburg - The Hawks and global policing group Interpol are observing the movements of at least six PetroSA officials following the investigation of a multimillion rand tender scandal, a report stated on Tuesday.

The Times Live reported that the passports of several senior PetroSA executives have been flagged and their bank accounts monitored following the probe into the scandal.

The monitoring of the executives' bank accounts and travel movements follows an exposé by the Mail & Guardian and an investigation by the Central Energy Fund, PetroSA's holding company.

PetroSA chairperson Benny Mokaba resigned unexpectedly on Monday.

Mokaba told Eyewitness News he believed it was "prudent" to resign while claims of misspending were being investigated. The company has also called an urgent news conference on Tuesday.

The misspending claims centre around payments of more than R200m in connection with the acquisition of an oil company.

The Hawks spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko would only say that “persons of interest” are being monitored and that "the investigation has been speeded up and developments are expected within the week".
