Johannesburg - Denel on Friday welcomed the appointment of its new chairperson Zoli Kunene.

Group CEO of Denel Talib Sadik said the new chairperson has a deep understanding of the international and local defence and aerospace industry, as well as a wealth of experience in all aspects of business.

"He has served with distinction on the board of Denel and some of its subsidiaries for the past five years. We are fortunate to welcome him as chairperson at a time when Denel is poised to enter an exciting new period of growth," he said in a statement.

Minister of Public Enterprises Malusi Gigaba last week announced that the whole Denel board, apart from two members, would be replaced. This was part of his decision to overhaul leadership at major state utilities, including Eskom.

Outgoing Denel chairperson Sibusiso Sibisi learnt of his replacement through the media.

Sadik paid tribute to the outgoing board members, saying they had provided leadership and guidance during Denel's turnaround phase.
