Johannesburg - State-owned defence group Denel said on
Monday it was ready for growth in Africa and exploring
opportunities to expand the range of products and services it offered.
Denel is active in 32 African countries.
Hosting a group of defence attachés of African countries at
Denel's PMP facilities in Tshwane, Denel CEO Talib Sadik said the company's maintenance, repair and overhaul work was a rapidly
growing market segment.
In the aerospace industry, Sadik said, Denel was increasing
its capacity to service a wide range of the aircraft flying in African skies.
"This is very important for African defence forces to
know that the capacity exists on our continent to maintain their fleets to the
highest levels of safety and quality," he said.
Sadik said the defence systems the company developed and
manufactured were thoroughly tested for the African market and highly suitable
for the geographic and climatic conditions on the continent.
Brigadier General Emmanuel Miburo of Burundi said Denel had
established an enviable reputation for the quality of its products and the
participation of its members in peacekeeping operations in Africa.
Miburo said that Denel Mechem, a subsidiary of Denel, was
responsible for landmine removal, battle area clearance and contraband
detection services in countries such as Angola, the Democratic Republic of the
Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mozambique as well as, most recently, the run-up to the
elections in Southern Sudan.
"We are impressed with the range of weapon systems
manufactured by Denel - ranging from the Rooivalk combat support helicopter,
missiles and guided weapon systems to world class small and medium calibre
ammunition," Miburo said.
