Burger King opens manufacturing plant in SA

Cape Town - Burger King South Africa (BKSA) opened its first meat processing plant in the country by establishing a joint venture with a local meat processor and distributor.

The joint venture will assist the hamburger chain with its rapid expansion plans – both in SA and in to the rest of Africa.

Excellent Meat is a 44-year old well established family business and the partners have committed to a R50m investment in a new facility at Elsies River in Cape Town.

According to Jaye Sinclair, CEO of BKSA, this new joint venture is critical to support the company's national supply chain rollout with a trusted supplier.

“We are confident that this expansion at Excellent Meat will create many opportunities in this particular area as the plant will create 60 to 70 tonnes of meat products per month," said Hassen Adams, chair of BKSA.

"This translates to about 700 000  patties on a monthly basis.”

He added that by 2015, the plant will be able to produce 3 million patties per month to support the growing demand.

Burger King SA is on track to source the majority of its ingredients from local suppliers.

By the end of the year more than 92% of its products will be locally produced.

“In addition to this joint venture we are in the midst of completing equipment installation with Rainbow Chicken so as to provide us with the fast growing demand for chicken burgers," he said.

"We have already established a strong relationship with leading bakery, East Balt and chip suppliers McCain SA."

Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies said this venture is an example of how a manufacturing enterprise can relate to the expansion of service activities.

“Service sectors are more solidly routed and have much higher growth potential if they are related to the manufacturing company providing their goods," said Davies.

"Agro-processing plays a significant role in the South African economy in terms of job creation and sustainability.”
