BMW recalls 1.3 million cars worldwide

Frankfurt  - BMW, the world’s largest premium carmaker, is recalling about 1.3 million cars for repair worldwide due to a possible problem with a battery cable cover in the car boot, it said on Monday.

The recall affects 5  and 6 Series BMWs built between 2003 and 2010, BMW said.

“In some remote cases, the battery cable cover inside the boot of these vehicles may be incorrectly mounted,” it said.

“This can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire,” the company said, adding it was not aware of any accidents or injuries to people due to the problem.

BMW said it was writing to car owners. The repair procedure in a BMW partner workshop would take about 30 minutes and would be free of charge to customers, it added.

The recall affects about 290 000 cars in Germany, BMW said.

      you sound surprised. Do your homework, 3 series they were always have mechanical issues. did you know about the 750 v12?

      Its only one recall (because of a cable) people, like EVERY automaker has almost every year. No-one needs to be fired and no "mighty have fallen"... Its a common thing, just look at some of these sites etc. http://www.motortrend.com/new_cars/recalls/

    2003!!! and they only picked up the problem now!!!!!!! 9 years later. great stuff. would not have one, even if you gave it to me.

      Maybe that's because it pops up of wear and tear after a few years.... really. If you don;t want a car because of recalls and problems, you might as well walk or ride a bike, because a car manufacturer without recalls now and then, does not exist.

    I am having the same problem with my 2006 BMW 3 series ANACONDA. All BMW workshops are failing to stop the smoking problem and the wirering problem. I took it to BMW Rusternburg, POLOKWane and Centurion. They all failed and I lost more than R30 000.00 trying to solve the problem, I need help here.I already have sent letters to BMW South Africa last month and a follow-up letter last week. still no one is talking to me. ,

      One has to BOOK a REPAIR withBMW .... and wait 4 weeks before they can attendto you... until then, you have to drive a 2nd hand car from their "used" lot... Will not have a Beemer even park in my driveway... Ever again!

      Had the same problem with a 2007 3 series, a new car nogal and they ended up up having to replace about half of the engine (short-engine?) last year. The car was always smoking and showing that the oil had been depleted even after putting the whole 1 litre bottle of the prescribed Castrol oil.

    I have 3 BMW's,never a problem with customer service!I think it's great to come fwd and at least say;We will fix this problem which "might" be a hassle in future! So,to the critic's,if you had never driven a BMW or experience with the brand,why comment! Any bad service,please list it on "Hello Peter",surely you will get some reaction! Come-on guys,what's the issue,can't blame the cat,get real!

    BMW is one of the few carmakers that would not hesitate to recall... I have always faound them to be honest and totally transparent, as well as earger and willing to assist with any problem on one of their vehicles. Will continue to support them, as I have done continually from 2000!
