ArcelorMittal SA to present environmental plan

Johannesburg - ArcelorMittal South Africa will not challenge an appeal court ruling that it must hand over documents related to its largest steel plant to an environmental activist group, the company said on Tuesday.

The company said it had initially refused to give the Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance (Veja) its assessment of the Vanderbijlpark plant's impact on the area and planned remedial action because it was an internal working document and had become irrelevant as laws changed over the years.

Having lost its appeal, South Africa's largest steel producer said it will send the documents within the required 14-day period.

ArcelorMittal SA has spent about R1.5bn over the past five years on environmental activities at two of its plants, the company said in a statement.
