Johannesburg - The Indian Premier League tournament starting in South Africa on May 18 could bring more than R100m in tax revenue to the country.
South Africa will be at presenting the IPL tournament this year because safety concerns have made it impossible for the organisers to hold it in India.
The tournament was held for the first time last year, yielding R182m (about $18.2m) for the Indian government's coffers. No-one knows for sure how many visitors the tournament will draw to South Africa, but the popularity of the sport at international level, say those in the know, could provide SA with a similar income from this year's tournament.
The organisers say that as many as 10 000 foreign supporters could flock to South Africa.
South Africa is expected to have to issue up to 1 000 visas for players and others involved in the tournament. The organisers note that they have received assurances that South Africa will do so speedily, which is one of the reasons the country was selected rather than England.
