Cape Town - Webhelp is the newest global BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) entrant into the South African market.
It officially launched its SA operations in Cape Town on Wednesday.
Webhelp SA currently employs over 600 people and are projected to grow to 1 500 employees by the end of 2014.
Webhelp SA is part of the Webhelp Group, which provides comprehensive customer lifecycle management services across a range of digital, social and traditional voice channels to an international client base.
Webhelp operates from two locations across SA, 10 sites in the UK and 25 across Europe and Africa.
The Webhelp Group set up Webhelp SA earlier this year with centres in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
This South African venture will give Webhelp the ability to service international contracts, operating a blended onshore, offshore and near shore model.
Webhelp SA is a level 2 contributor to the BBBEE and a member of BPeSA and CCMG in the country.
Evan Jones, Webhelp SA's COO, told Fin24 that the group, which was originally founded in France, chose South Africa for its value proposition.
This relates to factors like lower cost than in the UK, a similar time zone than in the UK, good infrastructure, good quality of management and a good track record in the BPO industry.
Webhelp SA's CEO Craig Gibson told Fin24 said the weak rand and SA departement of trade and industry's incentives for the BPO industry, added to the country's value proposition even more.
Jones added that SA's stable political environment was another plus.
"We have a strong outline to expand even more in SA, That is why we made this investment," said Gibson.
Webhelp is aiming to build a 5 000 seat business in SA over next five years and is looking at expanding to locations like Port Elizabeth.
"The real thing that drives this business is the role that BPO plays in SA’s ecoomy," said Gibson.
"BPO stimulates levels of employment in the youth sector. Seeing 400 people in the Western Cape now having careers with an international company is the dream we want to make alive here."
The group's SA operations will serve the UK, Australia and look to using SA to springboard into the rest of Africa.
