Vodacom to roll out 4G by year-end

2012-09-28 11:17

Johannesburg - Vodacom Group [JSE:VOD] plans to launch 4G high-speed services by the end of this year, its incoming chief executive said on Friday.

Vodacom, the South African unit of Britain's Vodafone, will roll out the next-generation LTE standard, Shameel Joosub told reporters at a media event in suburban Johannesburg.

Joosub is scheduled to replace out-going chief executive Pieter Uys in April next year.

And we'll pay an arm and a leg for it!!!!

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-09-28 11:44

We already do for 3G, so i can't imagine how expensive 4G will be.

How about you try getting 3G accessible everywhere first? Running ahead of yourselves again... It's all about the money, money, money

      oscar.pretorius.52 - 2012-09-28 11:32

I agree. They can't even get their 3G right in Gauteng. All about profit to Vodacom while quality of service leaves more to be desired

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-09-28 11:45

True, lately my 3G is slower than dial-up

      denny.cray - 2012-09-28 13:48

@Oscar - if there isn't a link between profitability and service then why isn't this the case? I don't mind that a company makes a profit (they have to!) but I do mind that they are able to make a profit due to being a part of an oligopoly. Each 3g provider is as bad as the next. (I know, I tried them all. Repeatedly)

Oh please, they can't even run their 3G service sufficiently, how will they do 4G?

This man is an utter fool. He has the nerve to argue that Vodacom's data prices are in line with Europe's. Such blatant trash coming out of his mouth makes me question his ability to do anything.

They are... except for the fact that they have contract phones that get free internet uncapped for 20 rand a month... they forgot that feature here.

      loki.scribus - 2012-09-28 12:25

The problem is that the prices are probably in line with Europe's, but our salaries aren't. The cost of living in SA is actually astronomical. In the UK, for instance, you can earn GBP 1,000 per month doing a very, very menial job, like being a kitchen porter. That's R12,000 about. If you do the same job here, you'll be lucky if you get R4,000. Big companies in SA, including Eskom, have realised they can charge the public what they want, because government is behind them all the way. NO ONE is looking after the consumer.

      oscar.pretorius.52 - 2012-09-28 17:15

I'm sorry Loki but our prices are not in line with Europe. They not even in line with other countries like Kenya. When I was last there uncapped internet on PRE-PAID cost around 220-250 rands per month. I'm paying a similar amount for 3Gb per month while being locked into a 24month contract

Vodacom sounds desperate. Just because MTN said they'll roll-out 4G by end of the year doesn't mean they(Vodacom) must also come-out and set themselves the same target, which would be unrealistic for them anyway. Sounds like "me too" kinda of story.

  • henk.vanrensburg.31 - 2012-09-28 11:36

At 4 times the price? When are we going to get an uncapped service?

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-09-28 11:47

Ha! Yeah right, that is wishful thinking. Their main revenue is through data charges, why would they give that up by actually caring about customer satisfaction?

      ivan.norval.1 - 2012-09-28 11:52

I am from Namibia, Windhoek, we already have 4G, uncapped @ R999.00 /month

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-09-28 12:33

      Which is damn expensive!!!

      loki.scribus - 2012-09-28 13:31

Expensive is spending R1200 per month on Vodacom 3G for less than 3GB. I did that for a while, and then went ADSL.

  • sssully - 2012-09-28 11:58

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! they cant even run the network as it stands!! 4G??? i actually cant stop laughing at how bad their management is!

  • bernard.geldenhuys2 - 2012-09-28 13:56

Ok Vodacom, 1st of all, how about getting the basics right? Like for instance your dropped calls, I for one have a business contract. But it should be called a homeless contract because no calls are coming through, I only get your sms service notifying me that there has been missed calls when I have a full signal. Take your 4g and shove it, I want better voice calls 1st.

  • sean.murphy.165 - 2012-09-28 15:16

Why bother. We cannot even get 3G in most areas of the country.

  • michael.a.devilliers - 2012-09-29 11:41

How about you fix the basics first? Network Busy. Network Busy. Network Busy.

  • jacques.shepperson - 2012-09-29 13:53

Funny that 4G is already in Namibia...
