2011-08-24 17:58

Johannesburg - South Africa’s biggest wireless phone operator Vodacom Group [JSE:VOD] has slashed data prices for its prepaid and top-up users by 42%, it said on Thursday.

Vodacom, majority owned by Britain’s Vodafone, said last month competition was intense and that it expected pricing pressure to continue.

The company competes with MTN Group [JSE:MTN] , unlisted Cell C and Neotel.

Only for the small-time users. The ones who use a lot pay the same.

Slashed pricing ? what a load of rubbish - their larger bundles have got even more expensive. They have only reduced the price of their mickey mouse bundles, to give the impression that it is an overall reduction. Don't fall for their sham. I pay R 83.00 a month for 2 GB from Cell C - that's R 41.50 per GB. Vodacoms new price is R 279.00 per GB !!!!!! That is 7 times the price of Cell C !!!!! rip-off artists

And what about some discount for contract clients?

  • AndrewPeel - 2011-08-24 19:06

Dit is wonderlik, nou moet julle net kry dat ons ons Blackberries ook kan gebruik en ek sal nog blyer wees, want tans werk Blackberries in Bloem glad nie saans nie.

These guys could reduce their prices a further 5% and it would not hurt their bottom line. Walk into any convenience store in SA and at least one in every two customers is purchasing air time.

About time , was about to change to CELL C !!!!!!!

  • ajcvdw - 2011-08-24 19:33

Ummm... Just had a look at their new rates. Always used to pay R389 for 2.3Gig - now it is R429?!?!? A 10% increase!

  • Tech Observer - 2011-08-24 19:37

Nothing meaningful in this article. It refers to the very small changes made on the 1st August. With 8ta running bundles at 1.9c per mb and cellC 5c per mb, vodacom at 17c per mb is lagging far behind.

  • Rahul Keshav - 2011-08-24 19:39

u forgot to say 8ta!! they r slashing prices cos of 8ta

  • Tech Observer - 2011-08-24 19:41

These changes were minor, and effective on the 1st August. Vodacom still only dips to 17c per mb, where 8ta is already at 1.9c per mb as well as cellC at 5c per mb.

Must look carefully!!! Some prices have actually gone up!!! Currently on My Gig 1.2 you pay 24c pMB and when the new prices come into effect, the price on My Gig 1 will cost 27c pMB!!!!

  • terry.wang2 - 2011-08-24 21:27

If you look carefully, Vodacom is actually increasing its prices for people who use more than a gig. Currently on My Gig 1.2, you pay 24c pMB and when the new prices come into effect, it goes up to 27c pMB when you go for My Gig 1. So in essence, they are increasing their prices for people who use more data.

There should not be any progressive data charges. A one off data-connect charge based on a one-off local call should be the charge.

  • Jeremy Paton - 2011-08-25 00:39

They did what? Oh wait never mind they just gave me 100MB for R10 less (I used to get the 600MB). Vodacom you fail, then again so does the general public who blindly sign VC contracts :(
