Vodacom denies sabotage caused outage

Johannesburg - Vodacom Group [JSE:VOD] has denied that a network outage on Thursday was caused by sabotaged fibre-optic cables.

"The cause of the outage is still being determined, and we will only be able to know once we have done a post-mortem on the situation," Vodacom spokesperson Richard Boorman said on Friday.

On Thursday, a large number of Vodacom subscribers were unable to make calls or send text messages.

Boorman said reports that the outage was caused by sabotage were incorrect.

"Severed cables were responsible for prior network outages," he said.

Vodacom said the outages were not related to the Rica deadline to register sim cards.

In a radio interview on Friday, Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys said the situation was being investigated.

"Thursday's outage was related to failures in two places, which should not have caused the network to fall over," he said.
