Vodacom denies sabotage caused outage

2011-07-01 18:31

Johannesburg - Vodacom Group [JSE:VOD] has denied that a network outage on Thursday was caused by sabotaged fibre-optic cables.

"The cause of the outage is still being determined, and we will only be able to know once we have done a post-mortem on the situation," Vodacom spokesperson Richard Boorman said on Friday.

On Thursday, a large number of Vodacom subscribers were unable to make calls or send text messages.

Boorman said reports that the outage was caused by sabotage were incorrect.

"Severed cables were responsible for prior network outages," he said.

Vodacom said the outages were not related to the Rica deadline to register sim cards.

In a radio interview on Friday, Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys said the situation was being investigated.

"Thursday's outage was related to failures in two places, which should not have caused the network to fall over," he said.

Stop changing stories or else you will begin to sound like a broken CD. Get your facts straight before going to the press. Admit that your system crashed due to overloading or some cheap carrier.a broken CD. Get your facts straight before going to the press. can you say oxymoron? so what yous are saying is that severing cables is not an act of sabotage?

      Fred - 2011-07-02 12:05

Yesterday Vodacom saiod it was sabotage, today they say it isn't. Can we believe anything that Vodacom says???

      zaatheist - 2011-07-03 05:09

I though cellphones operated without cables. Stupid me.

  • Sheda Hab - 2011-07-01 20:38

Vodacom you have pissed me off for costing me an important deal. Two months to go and I can cancel my contract - yey.

  • Riaan - 2011-07-02 05:51

Who can we thank...not Boland Bank this time. Most probably the ANC's forced AA and BEE. This is happening more and more in South Africa, from road works, sewage works, electricity supply, bad water supply etc etc etc. Vodacoms service has been degrading for the last few years.

IT is easy: 1. Test 2. Backup 3. Redundancy (This advice is free, Vodacom)

  • shauncro - 2011-07-02 10:15

there was an article yesterday stating that the outage was due to sabotage! FFS, make up your blutty minds before releasing a statment!

  • Leonard - 2011-07-02 11:26

maybe they should do upgrades on the network instead of eating steers

  • Larro - 2011-07-02 11:33

IFV " The cause of the outage is still being determined " then HOW do they know it wasn't sabotage ?? Crystal f-ing ball?

  • Ian - 2011-07-02 13:37

    yawn vodascum, boring

  • maverix - 2011-07-02 15:10

please tell me how severed cables can result in a situation where of 2 vodacom customers, standing right next to each other, one has no problems making and receiving calls, and the other has no connectivity at all. if it smells like BS, it usually is BS.

  • pitbull - 2011-07-02 20:42

After this wonderful episode I will switch to Virgin. At least their calls are cheaper.

  • Amera - 2011-07-03 14:32

Not Rica, not sabotage, not Chuck Norris - so what was it?

      Nuck Choris - 2011-07-03 14:56

      it was me

  • BlakKat - 2011-07-04 06:53

So Vodacom had a problem and we couldn't use our 'phones for a while. Big deal! What did we do before cellphones? Let's get over Vodacom's mistake and move on. There are more important things in life to worry about like how much of your free time you can offer to helping a charity.

      bent5000 - 2011-07-04 12:29

No, Vodacom claim to be the best and have failed. I got royally f*cked around that day, and it cost me. Stop sponsoring every second thing that comes your way and make sure that the only thing you have to deliver on works properly all the time.

  • Jacques van der Spuy - 2011-07-04 11:55

Just BTW. I've Rica'd my phone and the Vodacom sms said i would receive R110 airtime if i did before the 30th June 2011. So i did and???????? still waiting. Maybe go onto Hello Peter and report this.
