Johannesburg - Telecommunications company Telkom [JSE:TKG] on Thursday introduced a service that combines fixed-line and mobile communications.

"South African businesses striving towards increased productivity and efficiency seek the convenience of both fixed-line and mobile communications," managing director of Telkom Business Brian Armstrong said at the launch of Telkom Business Mobile in Johannesburg.

Research has shown that more than 80% of mobile calls are made from a fixed location, he said.

With a choice between routing the call via fixed lines or mobile, costs could be lowered.

Telkom's 140 000km of fixed-line infrastructure in South Africa would allow it to be the first operator to bundle mobile communications with its existing fixed-line offerings.

Telkom launched its first mobile offering 8.ta in October last year - about 15 years after its competitors.
