SABC staff may go on strike

Johannesburg - Unions at the SABC are threatening industrial action after salary negotiations reached a deadlock, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday the corporation met with three of its unions - Bemawu, CWU and Mwasa - in Pretoria where unions demanded a 10.5% increase across the board while the SABC was offering 7.07%, said CWU spokesperson Vulture Ntuluki.

The unions said the SABC had not shown commitment throughout the negotiations and had negotiated in bad faith. They said they had left the door open for the SABC to improve on their current offer, but maintained that litigation at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration and a subsequent strike were possible.

The SABC was not available for comment.
