SA suspends ambassador linked to MTN

2012-07-11 17:02

Johannesburg - South Africa's foreign ministry has suspended a former ambassador to Tehran after allegations he took a $200 000 bribe to help MTN Group [JSE:MTN] win a mobile licence in Iran, a spokesperson said in a radio interview on Wednesday.

Clayson Monyela told Talk Radio 702 that Yusuf Saloojee, currently ambassador to Oman, had been suspended until investigations into his links to the MTN deal are concluded.

South Africa's Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said this week in a response to written parliamentary questions that her department had started an investigation into the allegations against Saloojee.

Johannesburg-based MTN is being sued by Turkish rival Turkcell for $4.2bn. The Turkish company alleges MTN bribed Saloojee and used other underhanded methods to win a licence over Turkcell in 2005.

MTN has denied the charges and called Turkcell's demands "extortionate".

An elite South African police unit also launched an investigation but it has not given details of its investigation.

Saloojee has denied the allegations in statements published by the South African media.

Shares of MTN were 1.4% lower at R144.46, underperforming the Top-40 index, which was 0.88% down.

There are 2 Types op ANC comrades 1) Scaly 2) Very Scaly.

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-07-11 17:27

This is utterly embarrassing. Can we not have one single day on News24 where there is not something about BRIBERY, CORRUPTION AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS STEALING money!!!!

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-11 17:59

Is there no end to it all? Corruption and nothing but corruption whenever the ANC Government is involved in anything. Do these imbeciles genuinely not understand the difference between right and wrong? SA is doomed - we have little enough respect in the eyes of the international business community as it is, without having this type of moron rolling around. It sucks, it really does .....

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-07-11 18:13

Scouter, the punishment does not fit the crimes. That is why they carry on doing it......they are crippling our country.....empoverishing the people who actually support them.

Yet another public servant on leave with full salary entitlements. Rather send him as ambassador to a far away isolated place such as an island...

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-07-11 17:46

No hell Tommy, now you did not think........ an island rings - fresh fruit, fresh seafood, swimming in unspoiled seas and rivers, evenings on the beach not worrying that you will be robbed, mobbed or murdered. Why spoil it:-)

      Pieter Du Preez - 2012-07-11 17:58

Did many of them not come from an island?

  • lynn.syme.1 - 2012-07-11 17:27

er....what about MTN as a group? They paid the bribe after all. It takes two. One to make the offer and one to accept.

      alan.jerrold - 2012-07-11 17:35

Yep,it seems clear that MTN are as corrupt as the ANC. And THAT'S saying something.

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-11 18:05

Actually, Lynn - extremely good point you make. Well pointed out. Anything connected to the ANC is regarded as a soft target in terms of 'inducements' however.

Its a case of sour grapes. Iran gave the deal to mtn. turkey doesn't t have control over iran. If turkcell statement is true. Then sue iran. Leave mtn alone

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-11 18:08

You wouldn't just by the remotest chance, happen to work for MTN would you?

  • Pieter Du Preez - 2012-07-11 17:55

Years ago many of these clowns were jailed. Then they where pardoned and released, and some of them seem just unable to adjust to a normal life, career and promptly commit more crime. I have heard recently of a similar case, where was that again......? Damn Nationalists, the ANC is copying all your old bad habits? What, the ANC is like the old National Party, never, never! The ANC would at least stop corruption, nepotism, tribalism, it represents all people, it would never interfere with a free press, suppress free speech in art, literature etc. They will not allow education for the poor to be substandard, they will focus on improving the lives of the poor, focus on the employment of the youth and never be controlled by capitalist or be corrupted through money or power..... Or would they?

      Pieter Du Preez - 2012-07-11 18:12

They will never allow job reservation, protect minorities, prevent xenophobia, stop racism, allow free debate, support those who disagree, never interfere with the judiciary or allow incompetency. They will introduce an efficient public service, with employees serving the taxpayers and above all have a professional Police force to protect their citizens, reduce murder, rape and other acts of violence. It would ensure tolerance towards all races, nationalities, religions and sexual orientation. These were the promises made over 18 frustrating years. Where are the deliverables?

  • Hle Phewa - 2012-07-11 19:07

nowher in the article does it say tht ths Yusuf guy hs any connection with the anc Brown Fools!!!

      Tommo - 2012-07-11 19:35

As an ambassador he represents our government. He is chosen by our government. And the government is ANC. Got it???

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-11 23:01

Hle Phewa - just out of interest, which planet are you living on? This wally represents the current Government in all that he does or did. It is your type of simple mindedness that gets SA a bad name. You might be able to apply for a position in Oman by the looks of it though.

      magomarele - 2012-07-12 11:52

Some of you need education, little bid of it. An ambassador is chosen by the government to represent the country in a particular country, but that doesn't mean he must come from the rulling party. I know many ambassadors for SA who represent our country around the world and are members of DA, IFP, PAC etc. It's not automatic that by being an ambassador then you're a member of the rulling party.

  • Lindelwa - 2012-07-11 19:38

The heat is on!! all corrupt ANC cadre deployees must be replaced until there is clean governance, this includes corrupt leader Zuma!!

      stirer.kathray - 2012-07-12 06:09

They are just redeployed - it's like a game of musical chairs.

  • faizieishlah.shabalala - 2012-07-11 20:40

Is a Facilitation Fee bribery, Its paid every day when you take a driving license test.

  • magomarele - 2012-07-12 09:47

Some people are idiots, seriously. They keep talking nonsense as if MTN has been found guilty of corruption by any investigation or court of law. It's unwise to make conclusions based on speculations and few arrogant opinionists as if they were facts. Let's allow the law to take its course. If Tukcell feels so aggrieved by the Iran regime, why don't they sue Iran because they're the ones who breached their license agreement? MTN never signed any license agreement with Tukcell. This was a simple business deal and someone came up on top. Well done to MTN for making it in a cut-throat world of ICT industry and for being savvy. My appeal to some racist bigots in this forum is: don’t be racist about this issue, it’s got nothing to do with race. It’s simple business...MTN played their cards well and won...?
