Microsoft's CEO to leave

New York - Microsoft has announced on Friday that Steve Ballmer will retire as CEO within the next 12 months.

He will remain in the role of CEO until a special committee, chaired by Bill Gates and set up by Microsoft's board, manage to select a new CEO.

"There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time," Ballmer said in a statement.

"We have embarked on a new strategy with a new organisation and we have an amazing senior leadership team," he said.

"My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company's transformation to a devices and services company."

He said the company needs a CEO who will be there longer term for its new direction.

Both internal and external candidates will be considered.
