Cape Town – MTN Group Limited [JSE:MTN] earned a spot among the top 500 global companies in the 2014 Newsweek Green Rankings, which is one of the world’s most recognised assessments of corporate environmental performance.
MTN is ranked in position 276, with a Green Score of 35.4%.
The rankings use eight performance indicators, including combined energy and waste productivity.
"The recognition ahead of some of the major global brands is humbling", said MTN group chief HR & corporate affairs officer Paul Norman.
He said being ranked in position 276 is especially significant because MTN was in a small select group of companies whose revenue is generated off a relatively low environmental impact basis.
Norman pointed out that MTN is not only going green because it makes commercial sense.
"[W]e operate in some of the most environmentally-vulnerable parts of the world, where our customers often have the fewest economic resources to cope with the effects of climate change. As a result, we are conscious of the positive role we can play," said Norman.
MTN is also involved in other sustainable initiatives, including the UN Carbon Emission Reduction tri-generation programme.
The mobile operator's drive to reduce energy use and switch to alternative energy has seen affordable solar-powered charging solutions rolled out to customers in Uganda, Rwanda and Nigeria.
It offers cloud-computing and machine-to-machine products to help address water leakage, air quality requirements and grid power.
MTN also embarked on an initiative to ensure that e-waste is dismantled, reused or disposed of and is using waste-handlers and recyclers - SMEs - for this, "ultimately improving the financial sustainability and ability of e-waste handlers to create more employment".
MTN is Africa's biggest telecommunications operator, with 210 million subscribers.
