Johannesburg - MTN [JSE:MTN] lowered its international call rates on Monday, stating that with rates from as little as R0.75c per minute,, it now has the lowest international call rates to key countries in Africa.
The rate is applicable for calls to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Nigeria, Lesotho and Swaziland.
“We are introducing an offering that would address the growing needs of our customer’s to make cheaper calls to international destinations either for business or for personal reasons," said MTN SA's chief marketing officer, Brian Gouldie.
"We understand that these are financially strenuous times... (we) observed a need amongst a large base of our customers to make calls to African countries.
"These customers are key to MTN as they have a high demand for international calling minutes," he said.
The MTN group operates in 21 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
MTN last month posted a 22% rise in first-half earnings, helped by foreign exchange gains from its international operations.
It said group revenue rose 9.8% to R65.2bn and subscribers totalled 201.5 million, a 6.5% increase.
MTN expects to add a total of 21.1 million subscribers for the full year, it said.
MTN shares were trading slightly down at R188.01 in pre-lunchtime deals.
