Johannesburg - Africa's biggest wireless phone operator MTN Group [JSE:MTN] Group said on Wednesday the investigation into its former chief financial officer was related to "specific transactions".
"It's an issue of governance around specific transactions," chief executive Sifiso Dabengwa said without giving any more details.
CFO Nazir Patel abruptly resigned last month due to an investigation into allegations against him.
In the meantime MTN marked its 200 million subscriber milestone on Wednesday by announcing a R200m initiative to improve the quality of education across its markets in Africa and the Middle East over the next two years.
News of MTN reaching the 200 million subscriber mark comes a year before it celebrates 20 years of operations, from South Africa - the launch pad - to South Sudan, its most recent market.
MTN posted a 22% rise in first-half earnings on Wednesday, helped by foreign exchange gains from its international operations.
Its shares are up 10.3% this year, broadly in line with the benchmark Top 40 - (Tradeable) [JSE:J200] index.
