Cape Town - The MTN Group [JSE:MTN] is partnering with Etisalat, a leading telecom operator in the Middle East and Africa, to extend its network reach.
MTN will connect through Etisalat’s SmartHub, which is a global communications hub facilitating direct routing of traffic between the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe.
The deal will also allow MTN to connect via a new route to Europe, beneficial to its large customer base in the Middle East.
MTN's group chief technology and information officer Jyoti Desai said Etisalat’s Smarthub is an important milestone in expanding the group’s advanced communication services.
"The rising significance of UAE’s strategic position as the communication network hub for the Middle East and Africa region underpins the importance of this partnership in our expansion plan.”
Etisalat executive vice president of carrier and wholesale services Ali Amiri said: “This partnership with MTN showcases the importance of the SmartHub as well as puts UAE in the limelight as the regional hub for telecom services."
In a separate deal, MTN also announced a mobile deal with Hello Doctor, which is a subsidiary of Metropolitan Health within MMI Holdings [JSE:MMI].
MTN will deliver mobile health (m-health) solutions to MTN’s territories across Africa.
The roll out will take place over the next 18 months, starting with South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon and Rwanda.
"The partnership with Hello Doctor as the service brings essential healthcare information to our customers’ fingertips”, said MTN group chief commercial Officer Pieter Verkade.
Technology has made a huge impact on how the industry delivers healthcare, said Hello Doctor director Craig Townsend.
"Hello Doctor believes that its innovative offering across multiple technological platforms and its partnership with MTN, will allow us to work towards affordable and accessible healthcare for all.
"Underpinning the success of this goal is creating a link between technology and first-world clinical protocols, facilitated by medical professionals committed to making a difference that is both affordable and simple,” he said.
The paid-for services that will be available to MTN subscribers via the Hello Doctor mobile app will provide users with instant confidential access to over 100 registered doctors in South Africa who will be able to give medical guidance and advice.
