Johannesburg - Former Media24 senior manager Wian Bonthuyzen said he wants money in return for assisting his former employer prepare its case before the Competition Tribunal, Business Day reported on Thursday.
The value he estimated for his information over Media24's pricing strategies in the Goldfields area in the Free State was between R280 000 and R320 000.
This was because Bonthuyzen believed he had given his life to Media24 and they had "nailed" him by bringing charges against him after he left the company in 2008.
Bonthuyzen was subpoenaed by the Competition Commission to testify before the tribunal after having agreed to assist the commission in its investigation.
But he pulled out when the commission gave him a "hard time" by demanding he read voluminous documents and respond to them.
The media group is accused of engaging in predatory pricing in the Goldfields area from 2004 and 2009, which is alleged to have led to the demise of its biggest competitor, Gold-Net News.
The commission is asking for the maximum administrative penalty of 10% on Media24's turnover. The group denies the allegation.
