Cape Town - The Western Cape is ideally placed to become a top call-centre hub, economic opportunities MEC Alan Winde said on Wednesday.
He said the province had the critical factors in place to become a leading call-centre hub, in that it offered exceptional services to clients at a competitive price.
Winde said business process outsourcing was one of the Western Cape’s growth sectors and was worth an estimated R8bn.
"This sector is delivering a massive boost to growth and jobs, especially for our youth," said Winde.
"Currently there are just over 40 000 people employed in the industry. By next year the job numbers are expected to grow to 52 245," he said.
The sector was expected to employ 65 303 people by 2016.
South Africa’s business process outsourcing industry is also up for an international award.
It was shortlisted for the 2014 European Outsourcing Association (EOA) Offshoring Destination of the Year Award.
South Africa, who won the award last year, will compete against seven international outsourcing and offshoring locations.
“To be shortlisted for this award two years in a row is a fantastic achievement and underlines the quality of offshore service delivery taking place out of South Africa," said CEO of Business Process enabling South Africa, Gareth Pritchard.
"During the last three years in particular, we have seen some major developments in the industry and I look forward to similar successes during 2014.”
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in London on July 10.
The Awards bring the best and brightest of Europe's outsourcing industry together, featuring a range of suppliers, end-users and support service providers and affiliate organisations from the UK, Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Spain, to reward European outsourcing successes.
