British police raid Daily Star offices

London - Police raided offices of Britain's Daily Star paper Friday after arresting one of the newspaper group's journalists who was jailed in 2007 for phone hacking when he worked at the News of the World.

"I can confirm that a search is ongoing at a business premises in central London," a Metropolitan Police spokesman told AFP when asked to confirm reports that the Daily Star's offices had been raided.

The search came just hours after Clive Goodman, who now works for the Daily Star's Sunday edition but was jailed in 2007 for phone hacking during his time as News of the World royal editor, was re-arrested over corruption allegations.

Police probing alleged bribery of police officers and phone hacking at the Rupert Murdoch-owned News of the World arrested Goodman, 53, at his house in Surrey, south of London, said the city's Metropolitan Police.

It came on a day of fast-moving developments in the News of the World phone-hacking scandal, following the shock announcement on Thursday that the paper will close after this Sunday's edition amid mounting allegations of phone hacking.

Earlier Friday, Andy Coulson, Prime Minister David Cameron's ex-media chief and former News of the World editor, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in phone hacking and alleged corruption.

Goodman was first arrested in August 2006 along with private investigator Glenn Mulcaire over allegations they hacked into the mobile phones of members of the royal household, including those of Princes William and Harry.

Five months later the reporter was jailed for four months and Mulcaire for for six months after they admitted intercepting voicemails.

The phone-hacking scandal has been simmering for months but escalated dramatically this week.

It was alleged that the mobile phone of a teenage girl who went missing and was later found dead had been hacked, and that relatives of dead British soldiers and relatives of victims of the London 2005 bombings were targeted.
