Cape Town - Parliament will investigate complaints by employees of Transnet,
the chairperson for the portfolio committee on public enterprises
said on Wednesday.
"The allegations brought by the staff members are very serious,
as they relate to irregularities on the supply chain management and
procurement," Vytjie Mentor said in a statement.
Mentor said that preliminary investigations were underway. The
complaints were raised by staff during a visit to Transnet by the
committee.
Recent media reports alleged that there were procurement irregularities at the utility resulting in it overspending by R5.4bn, told a media briefing in Johannesburg.
"There was an attempt to create the impression that Transnet Capital Projects (TCP) was not managing engineering, procurement and construction management costs and had something to hide," acting group CEO Chris Wells said in response.
He added that there was "clear evidence" that emails contained in a document about the alleged mismanagement had been "doctored".
