Johannesburg - The National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) on Wednesday condemned the rumoured appointment of former mining boss Bobby Godsell as Eskom chairperson.

Numsa spokesperson Mziwakhe Hlangani said his appointment, expected to be announced at Eskom's annual general meeting on Thursday, would be "a step too far backward for real transformation".

The public enterprises ministry declined to comment on weekend reports that Godsell had been earmarked for the position.

"And this convinced us as a major labour stakeholder that the appointment has been kept a top secret only to advance the secretive agenda of some cock-eyed scheming forces," said Hlangani.

Media reports have suggested that Godsell, the former CEO of AngloGold Ashanti, would be ideal for the job because he would improve relations between Eskom and the mining industry, which was hugely affected by load shedding earlier this year.
