Gauteng fuel relief coming soon

Cape Town - The 11% tariff reduction granted by the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) for the conveyance of fuel by pipeline will be included in next month's fuel-price adjustment.

Bheki Khumalo, spokesperson for the Department of Minerals and Energy, confirmed the zone differential on petrol and diesel in Gauteng will be reduced by 1.5c/litre in June.

The current zone differential on fuel in Gauteng is 15.4c/litre. The differential is part of the regulated petrol price and intended to compensate Transnet and other carriers for the costs of bringing fuel up from the coast to the interior.

Nersa decided to reduce the tariff originally applied for by state-owned transport utility Transnet.

Instead of being increased by 74.4%, as applied for by Transnet, the original tariff is set to decrease by 10.83%, resulting in a saving to the Gauteng motorist of 1.37c/litre.

Transnet had originally applied for an 82.5% tariff increase, but later revised this to 74.4%, so that it could fund the construction of a new R12.3bn multi-product pipeline between Durban and Gauteng.

Transnet spokesperson John Dludlu said that Transnet would soon announce the outcome of negotiations with the government for an alternative funding mechanism for this new pipeline.
