Johannesburg - Africa's second-largest gold producer, Gold Fields, was optimistic about opening its mines in the near future as "a constructive process was underway between the mine and Eskom," spokesperson Willie Jacobsz said on Sunday.
"We're engaged in a constructive process with Eskom, so we feel comfortable," he said.
Jabobsz told Sapa that Gold Field's mines were on Sunday carrying out underground maintenance.
"When all the role players met on Saturday, it was decided that Eskom could supply some power for underground maintenance," he said.
There was, however, no mineral extraction taking place yet.
Safety first
"You can't just flick a switch to get mines operating again. You've got to go through a process - and we must make sure that the working environment is safe," Jacobsz said.
He said Gold Fields was now optimistic as "there is some power and maintenance work can go ahead - but on Friday there was no power and no plan."
The mining company on Friday suspended all mining activities at its South African operations.
Gold Field's South African operations produce approximately 7 000 ounces of gold per day.
