Johannesburg - Momentum launched its 2013/2014 cricket season in style on Tuesday, with an event attended by a number of big names in the cricket fraternity.
Last season the financial institution made a significant impact in its first year as a sponsor.
This year it is looking to up the ante in anticipation of a jam-packed season - starting with the Momentum One-Day Cup later this week.
Apart from its involvement in Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) premier domestic one-day competition, Momentum also announced plans for the season ahead, including social responsibility and development initiatives that will contribute to a meaningful transformation of the game.
Going mobile
Momentum also introduced a South African-tailored mobile app for cricket fans.
The new mobile app is the first South African cricket app to provide live, real-time scoring for both men’s and women’s teams of all SA ODI’s, SA T20’s, SA Test matches and all Momentum One-Day Cup matches.
It includes comprehensive stats plus profiles of national and franchise players.
Handy interactive features include the ability to buy tickets easily and safely through the app, plus easy Twitter integration to immediately engage with players, officials or other fans during the match.
Women’s cricket gets a boost
Another positive contribution last season was Momentum’s sponsorship of the women’s national team.
That has provided the Protea Women’s national team with a full-time coach in the recently appointed Hilton Moreeng, and with six players being awarded contracts.
“Momentum once again deserves to be praised for being more than just a major sponsor of cricket in South Africa” said CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat.
“Indeed, I believe that their culture and creativity is setting new standards for the way corporates and sport should partner with each other in our country.”
“Involvement is not merely investing money in cricket but goes much further through an impressive social investments programme which seeks to build a society that promotes family values and support for under-privileged cricketers.”
Last year Momentum introduced designated Momentum family areas at all one-day matches, where the emphasis was on wholesome fun for the entire family, with extra activities laid on for the children.
It proved overwhelmingly popular and will remain a regular feature on the grass embankments at One-Day matches, both international and domestic.
“Going into our second year as official One-Day sponsor, we could not be happier with the results of our efforts,” said Danie van den Bergh, head of Momentum brand.
eKasi Cricket Challenge
This year also saw the launch of the Momentum eKasi Cricket Challenge which included the upgrading of cricket facilities in Mamelodi and Soshanguve, adding immense value to the sporting lives of children in the respective communities.
With the help of regional franchises Momentum and CSA will be calling on all cricket fans and players to bring their used or un-needed cricket gear to matches to donate to aspirant cricketers.
Easily accessible collection bins will be at all One-Day matches in the Family Areas for the public and players to deposit their donations.
