Johannesburg - South Africa has named a central bank veteran as interim head of bank regulation, until a permanent replacement is found for the outgoing regulator.
The South African Reserve Bank said in a statement on Monday it has named Michael Blackbeard as registrar of banks. Blackbeard will hold the position until a permanent appointment is made, or until January 31 2012, the central bank said.
Blackbeard joined the central bank in 1992 and has been deputy registrar since 2006. He will replace Errol Kruger, who stepped down at the end of July.
