Cape Town - First National Bank has registered a patent for transferring money from within an instant messaging service, according to MyBroadband.
The agency reported on Sunday that the banker registered the patent in South Africa.
Head of FNB Connect, Farren Roper, was reported as saying that the unique combination of instant messaging and mobile banking is what makes the technology patentable.
The FNB app allows users to send money to a contact as an instant message via its eWallet.
The eWallet allows anyone to send money to anyone with a valid South African Cellphone number, even if they don't have a bank account.
The bank unveiled the revision of its online banking platform in July.
According to the annual Finweek Bank Charges Report, FNB emerged as the cheapest bank in 2012 on the Pay as You Transact option.
It was also named as South Africa's banking industry leader in February, in a survey by the South African Customer Satisfaction Index (SAcsi).
FNB also won the Most Innovative Bank of the Year Award at a prestigious global award ceremony in Washington DC in October 2012.
