Johannesburg - Debt counsellor Christopher Bornman has been deregistered following "numerous complaints", the National Credit Regulator (NCR) said on Wednesday.
"The National Credit Regulator conducted an investigation into the debt counselling practices of Mr Christopher Bornman as a result of numerous complaints which the NCR received from consumers," said manager for investigations and enforcement Jan Augustyn.
"Much of the unhappiness of these complainants stemmed from the fact that even though they were under debt review with Bornman as their debt counsellor, their credit providers were still harassing them and some of the complainants have lost their assets in this way."
Bornman is a practising attorney with two other companies, which were using Bornman's NCR registration number on their websites and thus making themselves out to be registered debt counsellors, Augustyn said.
He said Bornman was paying a collection commission he should not have, and he did not conduct debt counselling in the way set out in the National Credit Act.
This affected about 4 808 consumers.
"This is quite a substantial number in comparison to other debt counsellors," said Augustyn.
Bornman was deregistered with effect from December 13.
