Johannesburg - About 114 foreigners are working on Transnet's new fuel pipeline being built between Durban and Gauteng, the minister of public enterprises replied to a question in parliament.
The foreigners come mainly from France, Britain, Ireland, Peru, Spain and Italy. According to the minister, they work for the project's main contractor, the French group Spiecapag, which specialises in the accelerated construction of overland pipelines.
Transnet urgently needs to complete the pipeline to avoid inland fuel shortages. An increasing amount of fuel is currently being transported to Gauteng by road because the existing pipeline is operating at full capacity.
According to the minister, the help of foreigners was called in because they have specific expertise in the building and joining of pipelines, as well as specialised welding and drilling skills.
About 1 441 local people are working on the project and everything possible is being done to recruit locals, the minister said.
