Johannesburg - Eskom trade unions have signed a wage deal after "marathon meetings", the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) said on Wednesday.

"The National Union of Mineworkers (Num), together with two other unions, finally signed the wage deal with Eskom last night (Tuesday). These come after marathon meetings," Num chief negotiator Paris Mashego said in a statement.

"The agreement entails a wage increment of 9% as well as a housing allowance of R1 500 per month."

"We further agreed to disagree on the back payments of the housing allowance as we needed it to be backdated to December," Mashego said, adding that the Num would be following dispute resolution mechanisms to deal with it.

The parties further agreed to conclude a minimum service agreement within a period of two months as well as to go on a relationship building exercise to mend the poor industrial relations at the utility.

This was a one-year wage deal, backdated to July 1.

Solidarity, Num and the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) have been locked in wage negotiations with the electricity utility for weeks, which eventually saw the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) intervene.
